GAMZE ÇANKAYA

Biography

Gamze Çankaya (born April 1, 1995, in Akhisar, Manisa) is a Turkish artist specializing in the wax batik technique. She completed her undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dokuz Eylül University, and is currently pursuing her master’s degree at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.

Her artistic journey began with an exploration of the relationship between textile and space through wax batik, a traditional technique. The establishment of the Abawax brand was initiated as a means of integrating her art into daily life. Çankaya’s works are characterized by a fusion of traditional methods and modern perspectives, creating a unique aesthetic harmony.

Her philosophy of art is encapsulated in her statement: “Art is a search for reality beyond rules. It carries freedom and the courage to transcend boundaries. By remaining loyal to our roots, we amplify the voices of the marginalized and keep this voice alive as a form of rebellion.”

In wax batik, patterns are created on fabric using wax before the painting process. This technique, which combines control and coincidence, is employed by Çankaya to produce original works that balance tradition and innovation. She emphasizes the importance of staying rooted in heritage while expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. By adapting traditional techniques to diverse materials and forms, she continues to challenge and redefine the conventions of her craft.

Workshops held in Istanbul allow Çankaya to share her technique and passion for wax batik with a broader audience, further contributing to the preservation and evolution of this traditional art form.
